All Of LBCC’s Remote Computer Shutdown, Possible?

Shutdown or Reboot all of them… and at the same time simultaneously,???

It is possible if a network is unsecured and with the proper knowledge, to shutdown/restart all computers and then make them restart again, over, and over, until server crashes.(at least in theory)

Hi, Ya’ll today I Was at school, doing some computer work for a class.

Anyways, I was messing around with the Command prompt in windows.

And I found a network issue, very simple, that if known how to use

and use properly :p:P can cause what some people call a Chaos-Shutdown.

Okay let’s say that you know how to use the shutdown commands

and you make the command line to show you the Remote Shutdown Dialog,

and the network you are in, has the same miss-configuration, that i

found today, you can shut down all the Computers on that same network, without having to be an administrator. In this case in LBCC in any of their 2 campuses you can execute this command and shut down their computers in most cases you can shut down only a computer only one by one, but if you know command line in Linux, you can shutdown all computers with one hit.

Why or how does this affect LBCC? It might sound stupid but, a CSdown can cause the following all you need is internet connection(WiFi Connection) with that network.:

let’s say that is is FINALS DAY,

and most classes or computer related classes are giving classes online, and someone decides to execute this command, and everyone that is taking the test is about 50-70% done, what happens, if the text is lets say 3 hours long and someone decides to shut all computers on finals day on both campuses, LAC and PCC, whats going to happen? make students take tests all over again? while they have to continue with their lives, come on, no one wants to take all tests all over again.

In another scenario, Lets say that it is walk-in registration day and someone knows about this command and

wants to shut-down/restart any computer, they can shutdown even the office computers. What can happen?, even though the server automatically backs up some data from the computers on that network, the office can still lose valuable data. And if all computers shut down at the same time, they will need to restart, when restarting all computers at the same time, they will all have to load the settings from the network…

After all there are many other ways of doing bad stuff while you are in a shared network, for example Sniffing the network, or poisoning the network and so on.

Following, I will post some pictures, so you can see that this can be done.

I will not post the method on how to do it, because this post is with intentions of INFORMING network administrators, that they should be more careful with their networks, and not let a silly command like this one be executed from the command line with a limited-user acct.

I will be reporting this issue to the LBCC Network Administrators.
